Yes, today officially marks a year since I very shakily and hesitantly hit that publish button. Nothing to lose right? I haven't looked back and am enjoying the journey of creating and sharing as much now as the day I started. Thank each and every one of your for all of your support through this creative and food filled year.
If you have been following along since the beginning, you may be aware that I never intended to write a food blog. I had a rapidly growing recipe collection in notebooks and on my desktop. The dream was to write my own cookbook and I didn't want to settle. However, the realization of so many things came into play and I decided a food blog, for now, would be a wonderful & creative way to share all of these kitchen creations with a side of humour every now and then.
Over this past year, I have sure learnt a lot about food blogging. I know there are thousands of sites out there that cater to just about every taste bud or dietary requirement. So, many of these sites are stunningly beautiful with the most gorgeous photos I have ever seen. Prior to writing my own food blog, I only read two other food blogs and was quite shocked to discover how many food blogs are out there. So, why add another one to the mix?
To answer that, well simply because I love the whole experience of cooking, writing and sharing. I feel that my blog has it’s own little unique space in the vast sea of thousands.
For the most part, I have been sharing the food that hits our table. Very rarely, I make something that is specifically for the blog. By that I mean, I usually make food, write as I go, photograph it and then we eat it. So ultimately it is for the blog, but primarily for our stomachs. Sometimes, I have an idea in my head, and it could be a fancy appetizer made at 10 am on a Monday morning. That hardly ever happens, but when it does, it still gets eaten!
Well, it has been a great year and I am far from throwing in the towel just yet. I have learned so much, but there is so much more to learn. As for the book, well lets just say it is continuing as work in progress.
So, what better way to mark a year, than by celebrating with a favourite pick from each month. I have to say, it wasn't easy. With 353 recipes to date on the site, narrowing it down to just one for each month was a a wee bit tricky. But, I got there and managed to round up some of my favourites and if you read below each one has a little story of why they are my favourites. Once again, thank you all for stopping by and showing your support, it means the world!
How did the year shape up in my favourites?
May Profiteroles. Yes, choix pastry at it's very best, well in my opinion. These are my go to fancy dessert whenever I can't think of anything else to make. I have been making them for way too many years now and I love them just as much each time.
Favourite because....They were a success on the first attempt! I personally think these are the best profiteroles I have ever eaten. I don't ever say that about anything I make, but these, YES. Give them a try sometime and see what you think.
June Love these Fresh Cod Fish Cakes, a taste of home.
Favourite because...It reminds me of home. That simple. No matter where we find ourselves in the world, there will always be food that will bring us straight back to our roots. For me, nothing sums that up better than fish cakes. I hated them when I was growing up, but now they are easily in my top ten!
July For me, everything always comes back to food. When I scratch my head to think about a certain event or day, it always comes back to what I ate or cooked on that day. That exact same sentiment goes for this Roasted Squash and Lentil Curry. It was a hot day, well every day is hot in summer here. So what in the world was I doing making anything roasted? I just needed a reminder that life was not only salads, ice cream and barbecues.
Favourite because....It was absolutely delicious and I set out with zero expectations. I made it at least half a dozen times since this sultry July and even better in the winter.
August This Chicken and Vegetable Noodle Stir Fry is a great family favourite in our house
Favourite because....Everyone in my house eats it! Enough said.
September This Spiced Roasted Squash Soup is great for ringing in fall.
Favourite because...I know the seasons are slowly changing and my favourite time of year is just around the corner. Fall has always been my favourite time of year. Things become quieter somehow and just more beautiful. This soup sums of the season perfectly for me.
October This is tough one because there are so many I want to include here. So in the end I have chosen a super simple recipe but tastes absolutely divine. These Caramelized Pears are worth making, if only once. Check out the October archives because there is really a lot of great stuff in there!
Favourite because.....they are easy, delicious and can easily be served as a dessert at a dinner party.
November These Fancy Beef Burgers add a touch of ¨grownupness¨ to the dinner table.
Favourite because...As a kid, I hated hamburgers and any beef for that matter. Gee, was I the picky one. I was always the kid who asked for a hot dog. Don't quite know what I was thinking back then. So, finding my love for beef as I grew up, these became my favourite to make at home and to show myself that burgers can be a little like grown up food.
December Turkey and Christmas go together in our house. So, it has to be this Roasted Turkey with Dried Cranberry Stuffing.
Favourite because.....Well, because it's Christmas!
January Hands down, these Vanilla Glazed Doughnuts were the star of January.
Favourite because....Like the profiteroles, they were a success on the first attempt. Plus the kids loved them and we have made them over and over since then.
February You just can't get through this month without celebrating food with love. Doing exactly that here with these Individual Sweetheart Cakes
Favourite because.....I had only just became a member of the Food Bloggers of Canada and they featured this recipe in their Valentine's recipes! For me, that was a sense of accomplishment and it felt pretty good. Oh, they are also delicious.
March If you decide to make anything from this blog, make this at least once. I can't say enough good things about this Caramelized Onion, Mushroom & Caper Pizza.
Favourite because...I have spent forever and ever trying to create that perfect pizza at home. This is it, no question.
April A super easy Maple Glazed Chicken Dish that was a hit.
Favourite because....It was an off the top of my head dish that everyone loved.
May 2016 These Shrimp Tacos with Cilantro Lime Topping are so good and quick.
Favourite because...I just made them on a whim and already know they are going to be an all time favourite. Also it marked the very last recipe of the first year!
